A lightning strike in 1652 destroyed the Geissturm, a 115-foot-tall tower, and sent massive stones flying over the city, even landing on the other side of the lake in Wollishofen. One of these stones is still embedded in a garden wall at the Oberen Kirchgasse, bearing an inscription of the disaster. This explosion caused hundreds of thousands of gulden in damages to the city.
