Paul Grüninger, a police commander, saved hundreds of Jewish refugees from Nazi persecution in 1938 and 1939, despite being fired and later convicted for his actions. His bravery was only recognized and rehabilitated in 1995, three years after his death in poverty. Today, a street in Oerlikon, the Paul-Grüninger-Weg, bears his name.
