During the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs in 1444, a French knight, Burkhard VII. Münch, allegedly rode onto the battlefield, insulting the defeated Swiss troops. One of the wounded Swiss soldiers, Wylhelm von Baldegg, responded by throwing a stone into the knight's open visor, saying 'Friss eine deiner Rosen!' ('Eat one of your roses!').
