In the area between Gerbergasse, Rümelinsplatz, and Hutgasse, the Jewish community of Basel used to live and work, with their synagogue and homes scattered around. This was before the tragic event of January 16, 1349, when the entire Jewish community was taken captive and burned on a small island in the Rhine, near the current Mittlere Rheinbrücke.
