The Lällekönig, a giant copper head with a protruding tongue and rolling eyes, was once mounted at the Rheintor gate. It was a symbol of the city, but also a target for revolutionaries who saw it as a representation of the old regime. In 1798, it was removed, only to be reinstated in 1801 by opponents of the new republic.
