During the Council of Basel from 1431 to 1448, the Gasthof zur Blume was a hotbed of activity, with nobles and servants flooding the city, bringing not only money but also corrupting influences and strange customs. The inn's guests had to be hidden away in a secret room called 'zum Hintern Blumen' to avoid being attacked by the Eidgenossen. This peculiar arrangement was a result of the tense relationship between the city and the Austrian nobility after the Battle of St. Jakob in 1444.
