The Engelsburg, a former residence, was the birthplace of the Basler Seidenbandmanufaktur, where Emanuel Hoffmann secretly installed a Dutch spinning wheel in the 1660s, revolutionizing the textile industry and sparking a heated debate among the guilds. This innovation allowed for the simultaneous production of up to 16 bands, threatening the traditional webstühle. The city council, however, saw the potential and introduced a tax, the 'Stuhlgeld', instead of banning the new technology.
