The Untertorbrücke bridge was once the site of a war trigger, as the young city-state's first attempt at building a wooden bridge over the Aare in the 13th century led to a conflict with Count Hartmann of the powerful House of Kyburg. The bridge was finally completed in 1256 after a peace mediated by Savoy. It's a testament to the complex and often tumultuous history of Bern's expansion.
