The Haus zum Delphin was intentionally left to decay by its owner, the Schweizerische Rentenanstalt, in an attempt to justify its demolition and replacement with a new building. This practice was common in Winterthur's Altstadt, where several buildings were left to rot by their owners. In 1981, a group of young people occupied the building to prevent its destruction.
