In the 1960s, the postal car route from Sion to Les Haudères was so treacherous that the driver, Alfred Steiner, had to order passengers to get out and walk a certain stretch after a landslide destroyed part of the road. The passengers, including a priest, refused, and miraculously, nothing happened. The next day, the route was diverted.
