The Château de la Majorie, a 13th-century fortress, was the primary residence of the bishops of Sion and hosted most of the meetings of the Diète valaisanne under the old regime. It was also ravaged by two fires, in 1529 and 1788, with the latter devastating much of the city of Sion.
