On April 1, 1944, a formation of 50 B-24 Liberators of the United States Army Air Forces mistakenly bombed Schaffhausen, killing 40 people and injuring about 270, due to navigational errors and bad weather. The bombers had intended to target Ludwigshafen am Rhein, over 235 km north of Schaffhausen. This incident remains one of the most significant friendly fire incidents in World War II.
