The Strehlgasse was once the main thoroughfare of Zurich, connecting the Rennweg to the Weinplatz and the bridge over the Limmat River. The street's name is derived from the profession of a 'Strehl' or comb maker, who lived in the area around 1300. A comb, or 'Strehl', was even used as a sign for a house at Strehlgasse 8 in 1386.
