The Kunstmuseum in Basel has a remarkable story behind its acquisition of two Picasso paintings, 'Les deux frères' and 'Arlequin assis'. After a plane crash in Cyprus in 1967, the owner of the paintings, Peter G. Staechelin, was forced to sell them. The people of Basel rallied together to raise funds to purchase the paintings, with some even spray-painting 'I like Pablo' on the city walls. In the end, the paintings were acquired, and Picasso was so touched by the city's enthusiasm that he donated four more of his works to the museum.
