At the height of industrialization, pre-filled glasses of schnapps were waiting for workers on the window sills of taverns near factories in Winterthur. On their way to work, they'd grab a glass, and on their way home, they'd pay for it, often with another round. This vicious cycle led to the establishment of the Blaukreuzverein in 1888 to combat alcoholism.
